Researchers at the Key Laboratory of Regenerative Biology at the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health say they now intend to create dogs that have other DNA mutations, such as those that copy human diseases like muscular dystrophy and Parkinson\u2019s, the MIT Technology Review reports.<\/p>\n

They believe they are the first to use gene editing in order to <\/p>\n

produce these customised pups, although researcher Liangxue Lai said the team have no intentions as yet of breeding the beagles as family pets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal of the research is to\u00a0explore an approach\u00a0to the generation of new disease dog models for biomedical research. Dogs are very close\u00a0to humans in terms of metabolic, physiological and anatomical characteristics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
