Genome Engineering Creates Extra-Muscular Beagles

Those looking for family and personal protection dogs for sale may be interested to hear that scientists in China have been working on genome engineering to create particularly muscly beagles that are very strong runners so would be well suited to military applications or hunting.

Researchers at the Key Laboratory of Regenerative Biology at the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health say they now intend to create dogs that have other DNA mutations, such as those that copy human diseases like muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s, the MIT Technology Review reports.

They believe they are the first to use gene editing in order to

produce these customised pups, although researcher Liangxue Lai said the team have no intentions as yet of breeding the beagles as family pets.

“The goal of the research is to explore an approach to the generation of new disease dog models for biomedical research. Dogs are very close to humans in terms of metabolic, physiological and anatomical characteristics,” he said.

If you are on the lookout for a guard dog, we here at Total K9 can certainly help in this regard. Our goal is to ensure that every dog we work with becomes a trusted, permanent and happy member of the home they end up going to.

Our dogs come fully trained so if you are concerned with offering your home and family an extra level of protection that a burglar alarm alone cannot do, you know you’ll have a friend for life with one of our animals.
